What is Pod Design?
Pod design involves creating compact, self-contained living spaces typically stacked vertically within a building. These pods include essential amenities like a bed, storage, and sometimes even a private bathroom. Though unconventional, pod hotels offer numerous benefits for both guests and hoteliers, blending space efficiency with a memorable stay experience.
The Pods Factory: Revolutionizing Pod Hospitality
The Pods Factory was founded by two visionary experts: Robin Hagedoorn, creator of the award-winning Bunk Hotels, and Bram Breukers, a specialist in social furniture and logistics. The concept of Bunk Hotels—luxury hostels bridging the gap between hotel and hostel—served as a test bed for Hagedoorn's initial vision of upscale pod living.
The inspiration came from the space-efficient yet cramped Japanese capsule hotels. “When I started working on Bunk, refurbishing two old churches into luxury hostels, I knew I wanted pods,” says Hagedoorn. “But I wanted luxury pods. I wanted guests to have a premium experience at an excellent price, with sustainably produced, modular, durable, easy-to-install, and easy-to-clean pods.”
Turning this vision into reality wasn’t simple. It required over a year of searching, planning, testing, and refining. As Hagedoorn reflects, “I am a bit of a perfectionist,” and the journey to achieving the ideal pod was long and challenging.
